A very wise person recently told me to “say yes to the story.” This concept has really stuck with me, particularly as it relates to God’s story for our lives. Too often I try to guard my life and keep anything uncomfortable out of it. But when you look at Jesus’ life, it was anything but comfortable. He was constantly misunderstood, constantly giving up His rights in order to serve others, constantly having people try to entrap Him, and constantly having to explain Himself to His friends. But we are told that Jesus considered the end result worth the effort. He considered the story worthy of being written. And the remarkable thing is that the story, in a very real sense, is our lives. I get to decide who writes my story—Jesus or myself. I’m finding that although His story for my life isn’t always comfortable, in the end it is always a much better story than I could write.
